Safety Patrol & school safety
SAFETY PATROL
Mrs. Birrell (that's me) :-) is the teacher supervisor of the school SAFETY PATROL.
If you are an upcoming 5th grade student and interested in joining the Safety Patrol, applications are accepted at the end of your 4th grade year. Students will fill out the application, get parent and teacher signatures, write a short essay about why you feel you are qualified to be a Safety Patrol Officer (this is included in the application) and return it to Mrs. Birrell. You will be notified of your acceptance by email prior to the beginning of the 5th grade school year. *Students have already been chosen and notified for the 2023-2024 school year.
Acceptance to Safety Patrol:
A training meeting will happen during the week before school starts. All Safety Patrol Students that have been accepted will be notified either by email or letter or a phone call of their acceptance to the Safety Patrol, as well as the training orientation date and time.
2023-2024 Safety Patrol Orientation Meeting:
Tuesday, August 15, 2023; 9:00am-10:30am. Meet at the front entrance of the school. After the orientation meeting, Safety Patrol students will exit again through the main entrance to leave with their prearranged rides or walk home.
REQUIREMENTS for Safety Patrol:
Honest, on-time, shows leadership, kind, respectful of yourself/other students/teachers/parents, helpful, follows rules, responsible, reliable and trying hard in school work/grades. I will be checking with previous teachers and/or guardians for a good character report.
Safety Patrol Jobs and Personal Responsibility:
There is a Safety Patrol Room where a Job Pocket Chart is located. I will rotate the Safety Patrol jobs weekly. (Mrs. Birrell is the ONLY ONE who changes this chart. It is OFF-LIMITS to students. If a student changes this chart, he/she will immediately be dismissed from Safety Patrol.) Safety Patrol Students will be responsible to check the Job Pocket Chart the last day of each school week to see their job assignment for the next week. *(I change the job chart after school on Friday's, or if it's a short week, the last day of the week that we are in school.)
Most jobs are before and after school, a few are only morning or afternoon, so plan to be at school 20 mins. before school starts to check-in, and then be at your job post 15 mins. before school starts until the 2nd bell rings. After school, you will be at your post until the 2nd bell rings.
Due to the consistently and frequently changing rotation of the Safety Patrol Jobs, there is no weekly/monthly printed schedule for Safety Patrol. Safety Patrol Students are required and personally responsible to check the job chart weekly for their job assignment.
Safety Patrol Students are responsible to find their own substitutes for days when they are absent or sick. There are slots on the job chart where people are "off", meaning they do not have a job that week. These are the people that Safety Patrol Students can ask to fill-in for them.
REMOVAL from Safety Patrol:
Safety Patrol is an office of leadership and example to others. Kindness, Respect and Responsibility must be shown at all times! If a Safety Patrol student is consistently struggling with misbehavior, disrespect, falling behind in school work, late or absent to school or his/her Safety Patrol job, or not doing his/her Safety Patrol job, there will be a 1-2 time warning and/or probation dependent on the issue. After the warning(s) and/or probation period, if a student continues to have issues he/she will immediately be dismissed from the Safety Patrol. I have confidence that students will do their best and I will work with them the best I can. Please show me I can depend on you! I BELIEVE IN YOU! :-)
Safety Patrol Activities, Rewards & Meetings:
A training meeting will happen the week before school starts. All Safety Patrol Students that have been accepted will be notified either by email or letter or a phone call of their acceptance and the training date and time. Throughout the year we will have some special activities and rewards for excellent service and responsibility in Safety Patrol duties. We will have a Safety Patrol meeting once a month before or after school dependent on the month. Students will be notified a week prior to the meeting date and time. Safety Patrol Students are required to attend these monthly meetings/trainings. There will also be a really fun Safety Patrol End of Year Celebration! If there's ever an issue with anything or a need to communicate with me, students may come speak to me in person before or after school, at recess, or email me: [email protected] :-)

Before School Safety
Parents and Students must remain outside before school starts unless there is inclement weather. Students will be instructed where to come inside the school in the case of weather related issues. Safety Patrol will post green signs on outside doors to inform students they may come inside on bad weather days.
Prior to the start time of school, if there is an issue, event or special need that has been cleared by a teacher, special meeting/group, you may enter at the front entrance of the school and go directly to the front office for safe/secure admission to the school. Teachers and staff are in meetings and preparing for school prior to the start time.
Parents and students please follow student drop-off and line-up instructions. Thank you so much for your support!

After School Safety
After school we ask that students and parents follow the student pick-up rules. Students should exit the school carefully and timely. Riding bikes, scooters, motorized recreational equipment or toys are prohibited on school grounds. Students must get off bikes and scooters, etc. and "walk" them on school grounds to protect the safety of other pedestrians. Always follow safety rules and crossing guard rules when crossing a public street. Parents and drivers please follow traffic laws and school zone laws to protect students and pedestrians particularly before and after school. Thank you!
