Birthdays
We are so excited to celebrate student birthdays! This year each student will be given a preprinted Birthday Poster a couple days before the celebration of their birthday. The student will take this home, fill it out and return it on their birthday celebration day at school. Students will read/share them individually on/around each student's special day. For those students whose birthdays are during months outside of the school year, I'll choose a day around the student's half-birthday or a month without as many birthdays and we will celebrate it then. All class members will make a birthday card for the birthday student in class, and they will be a star student of the day. :-)
OPTIONAL: Your student may bring a birthday treat to share with the class. Please beware of food allergies and try to be inclusive.

Late & missed Work & Retakes
ILLNESS:
I know there are school district absence rules, but if a student is sick with an illness, please do not come to school! We would rather you stay home and get well as quickly as possible. :-)
Generally, late/missed work is to be completed a week from the day you RETURN to school from an illness or other personal leave.
I will NOT give out missed work prior to an absence because often schedule changes happen. If students are too ill to keep up on school work, I will give pertinent/ADJUSTED missing work they need in order to meet state learning standards. I am happy to work with you and be lenient accepting missed work due to illness with sufficient time for grading.
VACATION/PERSONAL LEAVE:
Please do your best not to miss several days vacationing during the school year. Particularly in upper grades we are learning new curriculum daily and it is challenging to get caught up when you return. It is often not possible to reteach several days worth of missed curriculum and work. I will NOT give out work prior to an absence. Our school schedules can change sometimes daily and I am not always prepared with school work several days in advance. When an absent student returns to school, I will give him/her the missing work to be completed a week from the day he/she returns to school from his/her absence.
TEST RETAKES:
Everybody has a bad day sometimes. If you need to re-take a test, you have a 2 week deadline to complete your reassessment. I want you to be SUCCESSFUL!! :-) Students will have a re-teach opportunity and then a reassessment.
I am always happy to work with you!

Absences & ILLNESS
If you need to be absent for any reason, please call the secretary at Upland Terrace Elementary immediately and notify her of your absence from school. This is important for safety reasons pertaining to accountability for our students. We want to make sure we know where a missing student is to secure his/her safety.
Upland Terrace Elementary School Front Office Phone Number: (385)646-5055.
Absences are sometimes unavoidable, but please do your best to be at school EVERYDAY possible. Particularly in the upper elementary grades students miss important daily, new instruction and new curriculum when they are absent. If you are not well it's always best to stay home and get better! None of us benefit when someone is sick at school. I am always happy to work with you and make adjustments where necessary on missing work during an absence due to illness.
COVID & OTHER ILLNESS SAFETY GUIDELINES:
If you are experiencing COVID SYMPTOMS, get TESTED IMMEDIATELY! If you have POSITIVE TEST RESULTS or experiencing other illness, call the school front office as soon as possible to let them know you are not well and inform them of your absence. PLEASE STAY HOME for the allotted period of time until you are no longer contagious and please wear a mask appropriately if needed. If you are experiencing any other illness (severe colds, STREP throats, fevers, severe coughing, flu, etc.) PLEASE STAY HOME. You need to rest and get better, and it keeps illness from spreading to others. I am always happy to work with you to keep you caught up due to illness.

Proficiency Based Grading/Learning (PBG/PBL)
In 2017, the Granite School District introduced Proficiency Based Grading (PBG), also known as Proficiency Based Learning (PBL). It changed the grading format from a letter grade system to a number grade system. The two grading systems are 2 totally separate and different entities and do NOT relate. This is still transitionally happening across the district and throughout the middle and high schools and they are experiencing it a little differently from the elementary schools.
Please remember, if your child is receiving a 3 or higher, that is considered an "A" grade. 3 is "at grade level" learning, meaning your student is performing at their grade level of learning. 4 is "above grade level" learning. (Anything above a 3 is considered "above grade level learning". For example: if you see a 3.1-3.9, this is NOT a grade-point average, but a grade-level average, they are NOT the same thing. In this case even a 3.1 is considered "above level learning" because he/she is learning above grade level. A solid 3 is grade level learning). Assignments, learning activities and assessments will have have built-in level 4 learning opportunities to excel.
Proficiency Based Grading (PBG) Scale:
3.1, 3.2,... through 4 - Above grade level (Student is performing above grade level and equivalent to "A" or above grade.))
3 - At grade level (Student is performing at grade level and equivalent to an "A" grade.)
2 - Approaching grade level (Student needs some support to achieve grade level curriculum.)
1 - Below grade level (Student needs intensive support to achieve grade level curriculum.)
